What happens if a left handed is forced to use the right hand?

Where can I find more information about this interesting subject? Suppose a child is born left handed, but his parents force him to use his right to “normal, like everyone else.” I know, the hand due to an inverse effect of the brains, but what happens to / in the brains where otherwise be forced?

There is an interesting research article that came out today, that shows there is a genetic factor in left-handedness. The reason some people refuse to use their right hand is the DNA forces them to.

the brain explodes!!! I’ve seen it before, I saw a kid in high school try to right with his left hand, he had a seizure.

  4. Taylor says:

it works. if parents force the child to write left handed, he just does. My friend’s mom did that to her son, and he’s right handed.

bit if you ask me, it’s absurd. I’m lefthanded, and proud.

I know that it can cause stuttering, but I don’t know much else about it. My mom raised high holy hell when my elementary school tried to switch me when I was kid.

well, that’s how my biology teacher was.
he was left-handed but his parents forced him to use his right hand.
so, his hand writing was a bit sloppy & hard to read.
you could read it though, it was just a bit hard to read.

It won’t feel natural to the person, but the right hand will improve in fine motor skills with the practice and repetition.

it really has nothing to do with the brain……its just whatever hand you are comfortable, and if your parents are freaking out about what hand you write with, then i would send them to a counselor to have their heads examined………”normal” i mean seriously, its just a preferable hand.
if forced, they may become ambidextrous

I don’t really know anything but this is hearsay: a person forced to be right handed will have trouble in math.

I was very ambedextrous when I was younger, and they had to choose my hand. My brother is left handed, and it drove him nuts when he was learning to drive a 5 speed car and using his right hand.

this happened to my friend. she was naturally a lefty but her grandma kept on putting whatever she was holding in her right hand instead. now she is pretty good at using both hands but better with the right. she writes with her right hand although she can write decently with her left, too. i think its called being ambidextrous.

  12. Whynot says:

I was never “Forced” to use my right hand, but my environment oftem demanded it. For example: When I played baseball, all my friends had right handed gloves, so I got used to catching right handed.

Other than being a lunatic, I really don’t think I was negatively affected.

I had a great aunt who was born left handed. Back then they thought that was a sign of stupidity or something so in school they trained her to write with her right hand. The result was that she could write with both hands equally well.

  14. iNeedhelp says:

nothing really. It just means you can use your right hand, but depending on people, some left handers that grew up learning to use their right hand could possibly use both in some situations.Like me,I’m borned left handed(I just realized that not long ago)and my parents made me use my right hand while I was growing up.I never really noticed until someone pointed it out,but I realized that I use my left hand to cut my steak.

My cousin is from Africa and he said that lefty kids were forced to use their right hands in schools. He said that their penmanship was often sloppy but eventually got stronger but not as strong ad their left. So ultimately, I suppose they become somewhat ambidextrous.

My Dad did that to me thinking it would make my life easier. It’s just normal to me, I know of no affects!

my father in law forced my husband to write with his left hand my son is left handed and I would never force him to use his right.

I know my Mother said the nuns at school used to hit her left hand with a ruler whenever she’d use it to write with. She actually suffered a lot of psychological pain because of this. she often brought it up…I guess it can be a bit traumatizing if your brain is naturally inclined to do something and it’s beaten out of you!

A generation or so ago, it was common for parents to try and make their left-handed children use their right hand. Most things are designed for right-handed people. However, it’s no longer popular or even accepted for parents to encourage a left-handed kid to use his or her right hand. It would be the same difficulty a right-handed person would have, trying to use the left hand. I don’t think anything would happen within the brain itself, but it would be a very awkward and uncomfortable situation to try and change what is natural for you, whether it is right or left-handedness. Some folks are ambidexterous, which means they are comfortable and competent using either hand, but those folks are rare. I’d say go with whatever feels natural. It makes no difference in the final analysis.

I am left handed, and I do not think anyone ever tried to force otherwise, but writing is the only thing I do left handed and if I had to I could write with my right hand. I guess that makes me ambidextrous. I would not think it would be a good idea to force the child to be right handed even though it is not always easy being left handed.

  23. Warren Beardsley says:

What happens is exactly what happened when the famous Dr Spock advocated that change .The hand dominance remains with the dominant hemisphere and fine motor skills are diminished with use of the other hand for everything and sloppy handwriting is the most obvious sign as we see in our schools today as many still try to change handedness in children.Hand dominance cannot be changed once pruning of unneeded neural connections accurs usually around age 4 .

I WAS left-handed til my teacher taught me to use my right hand. To this day it still makes me mad cause that wasnt fair to me. I had to use those BIG pencils. I do stutter a little but not sure if there is a connection. It takes me a while to catch on to some stuff especially all this technology.

psychologically i wouldn’t know. but i’m chinese and in a lot a places traditionally speaking (not now a days, really) it was quite common to for a leftie to be forced to become a rightie. and as far as i know it did no harm. i actually know a few kid who were forced to use their right hand when they were born lefites and they’re perfectly normal. although one of the guys i kno who is like that also plays volleyball and when he spikes and serves he uses he left hand, but he writes with his right. i think that when a left is forced to use thier right hand nothing really happens to them mentally speaking. they just end up training the motor skills in thier non-dominent hand, thats all. i mean it should still feel natural for them to use their left hand in situations they didn’t train their left hand for. also there are circumstance where a person can permenently disable thier dominent hand and their would jsut adjust to that all you have to do is train you’re self to be ambidextrious. and doing that does nothing to damage your pyche so why should using you’re non-dominent in other cases? and also most of the time this is done to them at a very young age so i would suppose they just grow used to it.

The brain can be trained to do just about anything. As far as what happens to the brain,it collects the information stored and the more it’s accessed the better it can respond. Thus…it grows in input as well as ability.

  27. Sabretooth says:

I have heard of cases where parents, teachers and so on have insisted that children must write or eat with thier right hand when they are left handed.
I think that they become *both* handed, but still was far better left handed.

It has no known other effect on thier brain.

Of course, I am not sure what the reason behidn them forcing them to do this was, as it serves no purpose that I can possibly think of.
